All my life my mom has always bought organic food. We never had tasty cereals, brand name snacks like pop tarts, yodels, Lays, Fruity Pebbles. Nothing. We were known by my friends as the "organic house" It was kind of embarrassing, but now I see how beneifcial it is to health. "Americans have never had a single, strong, stable culinary tradition to guide us," (Pollen, 5) I think that compared to other nations, this is a huge factor which contributes to the American eating disorder. Because we have never had a food culture, the American food industry has turned to scientists, and ways to distribute mass amounts of food.
I also thought it was interesting when Pollen talks about the way we define the food marketers phrases such as "natural grill flavor," "heart health," "farm fresh" and "range fed." First glance, its easy to believe that you are consuming something that is considered healthy and cheap.  But if you delve deeper into the meaning of the label, these mean nothing but advertising hoaxes. Only certain labels like 100% organic, or non-corn fed, mean that the food was processed humanely.
